NVCL Topical Symposium - AESC 2010

3D Mineral Spectroscopy of the Earth’s Skin

1st National Virtual Core Library Symposium and NVCL Operations Workshops

CSIRO and AuScope are co-sponsoring the above combined meetings to be held as a Topical Symposium and Workshop during the Australian Earth Science Convention in Canberra on July 8 and 9 2010. There will also be a TSG-Core intermediate-level, spectral mineralogy interpretation workshop run on July 10, led by Dr Sasha Pontual (Ausspec International), Dr Jon Huntington and Peter Mason (CSIRO).

The event will focus on the science and technology for collecting, interpreting and publishing the growing amount of public mineralogical data of the earth’s surface and subsurface from hyperspectral and imaging spectrometer data, and geological results from the AuScope National Virtual Core Library component as feedstock for AuScope’s Earth Model goal. To stimulate and cross fertilise current thinking about the uses, applications and modelling of the latest hyperspectral data several overseas speakers have been invited from the planetary spectroscopy community where significant advances are being made in spectroscopic technologies and mineralogical understanding. The meeting will afford opportunities for cross fertilisation on operational issues, new geological results, collaborative opportunities and accessibility of the data coming from the NVCL infrastructure. A session on the future sustainability of the NVCL is also scheduled.

A draft program of speakers is included below. Note that several of these represent builders of some of the primary spectral libraries we use.

Travel sponsorship opportunities for students and early career scientists with interests in these topics are available and they should contact Jon Huntington seeking support and providing reasons and the support of their supervisor / line manager.
